Pre-Game Thoughts:
Ogres V Woodies and I see stripball, dodge, MB is there but its irrelevant compared to the other skills. A draw would be very lucky in this matchup.
First Half Thoughts:
- I elected to receive. Im not sure if thos was the right call. I normally kick vs AG team. But I guess I was hoping to remove a few players early and make things easier.
- I placed snots in WZs kind of close to the LOS - not too far back. I always wrestle with this because - like do you set up thinking theres going to be a blitz? And where do I place a bunch of snots knowing a short kick is going to mess me up if I deploy too many back? The blitz put me on the backfoot definitely.
- Opps T1 he screens half my ogres away from the cage with the whole team and this is just awesome. I need to have the presence of mind to think about doing this with skaven.
- I took advice from a few friends and spent turns moving the cage and gathering the team, instead of trying to force a way forward. Some of my blitzes were just to get more ogres near the cage. A failed WD cage dodge allowed for some progression, it was a 3 plus dodge with the tackle piece. I think this was a good blitz because if it works, the ball scatters more than likely somewhere thats terrible for me.
- T5 all my ogres arrive at the LOS and have surrounded the ball carrier. I have to decide if I want to TTM or try to move forward, or use the hand off option I set up. I try to move and blitz wth a few ogres and I thnk it was 3 bone heads? No protection so the decision was forced. I burned a few RRs but we got the TD.
- T6 I used the chevron defense that was recommended by a friend. The ref KO result removes one of my players and opens an easy hole. If this did not happen, he could blitz a snot still, and if removal, can move players through but the blitzing player has to lead the screen or cage. Maybe theres not too much of a difference with the KO result or not here?
- T7 opp luckily forgets the handoff. I set defensive columns between the ball carrier group and the possible receivers. Some very lucky pows remove WDs.
- The score was a 3 plus dodge, 4 plus catch, and a successful blitz on the snotline with a non-block piece. I know I didnt stop the score, but im pretty happy to make it difficult.
Second Half Thoughts:
- The dakka offense happens. I struggle with this on defense, but ive gotten a little better at it. A few dumb ogres slow my progression because I know I need the whole team to try to deal with this.
- T4 I attempt a TTM blitz to 3 die uphill the elf off the pitch. I burn 2 RRs trying this because its potentially game changing and because snots on a column defense for elves are kinda laughable. I figured this was a better use of a snot.
- T5 I have a few elves tagged and I hold back a square instead of tagging the block tackle ogre. I dont know that this was the right decision. I guess I saw a potential 1 die crowd surf with a 2 die uphill. But at limited players and late in the turn, maybe it's a safe gamble this wont happen? Holding back was less risky but allowed for forward elf progression. I think I failed here.
- An elf makes an impressive 4 plus dodge to break through. Its a very good move because it forces me to have to deal with 2 fronts now.
- I take a BD on the T6 blitz after positioning a few other ogres. I figure if the elf is standing, easy dodge out and while nto close to the EZ for a score, could get well out of range. So I gamlbed hoping for at least a stun instead.
- T7 is very lucky. I do a 4 plus dodge, knock the ball carrier down, the ball bounces to the block ogre who then catches it. I think my failure here though was the snotling down field. I probably should have just moved in front of the elf to make them do more dodges. It may not have made much of a difference, but that 5% difference sometimes is the difference in the game. I need to pay more attention to that in the future.
- Single die block with RR, RR on the pick up, catch and score for the elf. This is a good example of saving RRs for the best turn possible so very good on my opp for RR management.
Overall Thoughts:
- I liked some of my defensive screens. They didnt work, but forced some slightly more difficult die rolls.
- Im still happy with the TTM attempt at a blitz in the second half. That one snot would not have made much of a difference for positioning through the rest of the drive.
Good game from a very good coach. Well deserved win. ”
