Matches have certainly gotten tougher in the SWL, as the Canetoads progress from Regionals to Conferences.
We have high quality opposition in the Fryers, fielding 3x trees and a tricky gnome.
Plus, the star of the league... Dewfoot.
There is no doubt Nuffle was watching. The 2nd half starts at 1-1 with halflings receiving, after a standard Canetoad score, matched immediately with a brilliant Fryers one turner.
Learnings
1. LEAN IN TO IT
So we are not so good against the stunty teams, but we deliberately throw our players around the trees to base the small mens.
I think this was done OK, but still we cannot generate many blocks, and certainly not enough removals to match our own growing numbers in the infirmary.
2. CRITICAL TIME
In the first half, we hang back with secure ball. I think it is a mistake, and we should have taken space earlier. As a result, the halflings have space to blitz cage and base ball with tree.
We find a solution, which involves a ghoul dodge, but could have done better to avoid.
In the 2nd half, we start applying pressure to halfling cage from T2, still trying to move around trees.
T3 we are able to blitz in to base the ball carrier, and then base the trees so there is no easy tree blitz to remove pressure on ball.
T4 starts with 3 stuns, so it is now or never. Things look good for halflings, so we blitz the ball carrier, but ball bounces between two trees.
Dewfoot is not broken or stunned, so we are forced into action. A silly 5+ pick up with wight, 3+ dodge. A 44% play with re roll. Even still, we hoped the scatter could have been better than where it was. This is where the game changed.
Critical 'GO TIME' was identified.
3. ONE TURN
Well... what a spectacle. I actually had to Samba it, and it seems it is 30% chance which is not bad, or 52% with re roll (which was not the case here) whcih means it works more often than not.
How to defend it, I do not know. Overwhelming LOS may help... or pray to Nuffle for snakes.
Fun to watch, in any case, and cool to see it come off.
Summary
In the end, Canetoads were very lucky. Many dodges succeeded, and all key dodges did too.
A fail sack attempt in the end due to Fryers snakes also sealed the deal. Nuffle watches.
Taking 17 MB and 10 MB+2 blocks did hurt us. In return, we gave out only 23 MB blocks, and lost the bash war.
6 dice were found on Dewfoot. One was a MB knock down, no damage. 2nd was a ghoul knockdown, KO which was apo fixed. 3rd was a MB tackle wight, no knockdown.
May Dewfoot have long life and cause headaches for all others in the Liverpool Lass Conference. ”
