My quest to win a game in one of the Major tournaments was denied once again, but that is OK.
It was a classic Orc vs Dwarf match, and we were outclassed both in terms of coaching skill and team skill.
Coming into the game, we knew there was little chance if we played traditionally, so we induced the bribe the see if we could play to variance.
Learnings:
1. OFFENCE
Against the slower moving dwarves, it is best to work side to side, like a wobbly tooth. Probe for the opening.
Perhaps we did not do this too well. We kind of invested to hard to the north in T6. Critically, leaving an orc based, ripe for surfing.
On a positive note, we were aware that keeping width would be key, and it saved us here. We needed some luck to hand the ball over, but it worked OK.
So, mistakes were possibly too much investment to one side, and perhaps not taking enough space earlier. We had to attempt several GFI which is never ideal.
2. DEFENCE
Once again, we decide to commit too heavily to the south this time, in our T5.
Critically, we tried to compress one side with our orcs. Instead we should have shifted players back to screen off the advance.
In the end, we were cut off, and forced to dodge to get players in position, which we failed.
So there, I think the biggest mistake was that. Position to just get in the way, is sometimes the priority. We did not position with this in front of mind.
3. BREAKTHROUGH
It is a breakthrough game. We lost, but lost well. We saw cool things, nice defensive positioning from #1 seed on FUMBBL, chain pushes to create opportunity for terrific plays.
With some luck, and of course better coaching on our part to negate the requirement of luck, this could have been a draw were it in the box.
It could have been frustrating, but it was fun. Thus, it is a breakthrough.
Good luck for the Cup, Coach Naama, and thanks for the game and generous advice.
P.S. Look to T7 of 2nd half. There was much better candidate moves. 2DB, 2D blitz, 2x GFI to create columns. 85% chance it works. ”
