“In their second game, against an opponent that could only field eight players at the starting kickoff, the Pitter Patter rats probably expected to score easily and score often, and they were certainly able to do just that. It is probably the defensive side of the game that has coach Shorty most concerned. His team had trouble stopping the elves of Moonlight-Shadows all day, twice allowing a touchdown, and very nearly allowing a third. When asked about the defensive difficulties the rats' coach replied, "Elves are a very slippery race, Wood Elves particularly so. It seems that the average rookie lineelf has a great deal of raw talent and the positional players have some excellent skills to boot. Our players just don't have the skills to shut them down yet but this was an excellent learning experience for them. All in all, I am quite happy with the outcome and the experience." As a closing statement, Coach Shorty added, "They were excellently coached and it was a great pleasure to have played them."
The weather may have had something to do with the rats' problems on the defensive side of the ball. The temperature and humidity soared to incredible levels during the second half of the match, even causing the fans to invade the pitch at one point. While the rats always had the advantate, I believe that having players fall out of plays between drives and during kickoffs might have caused this young team a bit of trouble considering the complexity of the opposing team's offense. When asked about the sweltering heat that forced him to miss a late game drive, Snatch Strongarm replied, "It was damn hot. It was damn humid. There was sweat in our eyes. There was sweat running down our backs. My hands were sweating. As if Elves weren't slippery enough!"
Spike Snaptail, Pitter Patter's Rat Ogre, broke out in this second game ringing up the first two official casualties of his career, thereby forcing two of the elves to leave the game for the duration. Coach Shorty asked that Spike's remarks not be quoted, but I will say that he seemed rather excited.
Entering into this game Coach Shorty had two requests of his players: Win the game and spread the ball around. It was the coach's opinion that some glory and individual achievement be distributed a bit more evenly among the players. Here's what he had to say when the game was over. "Positional players tend to get the glory. They throw most of the passes, score most of the touchdowns, do most of the blitzing and get most of the big hits in a game. I wanted to break the mold a bit. Stick to your strengths, sure. And don't expect to have your hand held down the field, but try to make something happen for your team and yourself. This isn't about hogging the glory, this is about being creative and finding a way to make the play work when the thrower is on the bench, the gutter runner is on his back, and the ball is in the hands of a storm vermin. Step up and get the job done. No excuses. If the ball ends up stuck in Spike's ear and he's roaring and screaming, there should be ten players picking him up and carrying him to the endzone and I dont want to hear about how there's sweat in your eyes!"
Players of note:
Bo Bristleback, MVP, for being in the right place at the right time and doing what needed to be done, TWICE! This won't go down in the stats but he had 2 catches and 4 blocks in addition to the 2 touchdowns.
Skadd Skittfeet, for completing all three of his passes in addition to his catches and touchdown.
Krin Qwickpaw, for his skills with the ball and his touchdown scored.
Spike Snaptail, who bashed two Elves off the field.
Snatch Strongarm, for completing a pass before the sweat got in his eyes.”
