Brandon Hughey is the second U.S. soldier to desert his unit and flee to Canada. His reasoning was that, because the war was in violation of the U.N. standards for lawful conduct of warfare (whatever that is) he could go AWOL. Somehow he failed to understand that when you enlist in any armed force you swear allegiance to your country and not the United Nations. Domestic laws are not superceded by international demands.
He failed to apply for Conscientious Objector status. He failed to simply disobey the order. Disobeying an order means you suffer the consequences of his actions. Instead he chose to flee and avoid his punishment. His actions led another person to take his place. I guess his moral outrage ends where the fate of another rests in his hands...
We Canadians should ensure that people are held to their word; we should send him back!
