Chilean international Mark Gonzalez was given the green light to begin his Liverpool career in July 2006 after being handed a work permit.
The exciting left winger was initially signed on a year's loan from Spanish side Albacete in July 2005 with a view to a permanent move to Anfield, but at first the work permit was turned down.
Instead the player spent a successful 2005/06 season on loan back in Spain with Real Sociedad and scored a memorable goal against Real Madrid.
He started his career in Chile playing for Universidad Catolica Santiago before making the move to Albacete in 2004.
He is a player with electric pace who can play on either flank or as a forward.
He was recommended to Benitez by former chief scout Paco Herrera, who used to work at Gonzalez's current Spanish club, Albacete.
An exciting talent, Gonzalez is a player that manager Rafael Benitez has high hopes for at Liverpool.
Benitez said: "Mark is an exciting left winger who can cross good balls and beat defenders and he is a very good signing for us. He has a very good mentality as when I was talking with him he told me, 'I want to play for Liverpool'."
