Major nutrient!
Nitrogen is used as NO3(-) anion, but taken in many forms including also ammonium[NH4(+)] and urea[NH)2CO]
This is the one that most plants in most soils lack the most.
In the 19th century Haber process was invented and man could use fuel to fix N2 from atmosphere to NH3 and use it in bombs for World War II, but even greater impact on the planets elemental cycle was the use as fertilizer.
Before the Haber prosess the only way nitrogen was fixed to NH3 for plant use was by biological nitrogen fixation and it was balanced by denitrification that returned NO3 to N2 in anaerobic conditions.
Today however there's a HUGE surplus of nitrogen entering the biosphere and we see this as the amount of food the world produces and in lakes, groundwaters and oceans.
