(I)n the finest tradition of businesses not knowing their clientele, Radio Pirate host Yves Landry went on a coruscating tirade about Les Habitants [the Montréal Canadien, a legendary hockey team], unaware that Bergeron was listening in as he drove up to Trois-Rivieres from Montreal last Thursday, an off-day for the club.
And so Bergeron called in to stick up for his team; Landry introduced him blithely as "joining us now is Marc-Andre, Marc-Andre Bergeron," said a version of 'what's on your mind,' ignored the answer, and shortly resumed his screed.
About four minutes later, Landry firmly digs himself into the muck by asking his caller "so, were you at the game last night? How did you participate in all that ?" referring to the game seven hoopla against Pittsburgh.
What follows is a delicious period of long, incredulous, silence.
MAB: "Uh, yes, I was at the game."
YL: "Ok, so you went to the game, to which game, uh, you went, so you watched it on a big screen?"
MAB: "Well Yves, I was on the ice in Pittsburgh last night."
YL: "Wow, are you serious? Well, I didn't know that, are you serious?"
MAB: "I'm number 47. I'm a defenceman, once in a while I take a slapshot from the blue line."
YL: (Nervous guffawing).
MAB: "My good friend Eric Belanger (of the Washington Capitals) was the one who introduced me to you guys . . . I'm driving down to Trois-Rivieres, so I thought I'd call in a defend my team a little."
YL: "Ah, so you thought we were being a little rock and roll, eh? Excuse me, I'm just waking up here."
