Comandanta Ramona was the nom de guerre of an officer of an indigenous Mayan revolutionary based in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. She was perhaps the most famous female Zapatista. Known as 'The Petite Warrior', she was one of seven female commanders of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), an army that consisted of one-third women.
In 1994 Ramona led the rebels to take the town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, demanding greater rights for the indigenous people of Chiapas and protesting Mexico's involvement in NAFTA. After the rebellion, Ramona represented the EZLN in peace talks with the Mexican government. In 1996 she attended the National Indigenous Council in Mexico City, in defiance a government ban. Her supporters formed a human shield around her so that she could not be arrested.
Even after her death, she continues to serve as a symbol of equality and dignity for indigenous and impoverished women. Her real name and pre-revolutionary history were never revealed.
