Georges-Jacques Danton was born on October 26, 1759, in Arcis-sur-Aube, France. He rose to prominence as an early leader in the French Revolutionary and was recognised as an excellent orator, often credited as the chief force in the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic (September 21, 1792).
Later, Danton became the first president of the Committee of Public Safety, but his views became increasingly moderate compared to many of his fellow revolutionaries, and he found himself in opposition to the revolution's 'Reign of Terror' in 1793-4.
As a result of this opposition he found himself declared an enemy of the revolution, and was defiant to the last, but arrested and executed at the guillotine in April of 1794.
