Black leather outfits with platform shoes and white kabuki make-up helped launch these milk-mustachioed pioneers of glam rock into the upper stratosphere of musical legends. Founded in 1972 by Gene Simmons and longtime friend Paul Stanley, KISS has been attracting fans, young and old, for two decades. With 23 gold albums in a row, KISS ranks behind only the Rolling Stones and Beatles for consecutive gold albums. Pretty good company to keep, for a group of guys from Queens, N.Y.
So, what's the story behind the makeup and crazy, high-tech stage shows? It's simple, the members of KISS want to give their fans something extra. Not only music, but a carnival-like stage spectacle that personifies the whole KISS "image," which continues to influence popular culture. In their heyday, Marvel Comics released a series of KISS comic books, which led to KISS action figures and a full-length TV movie, Phantom of the Amusement Park.
These days, members of KISS can be found behind billowing clouds of dry-ice fog, playing such high-profile shows as the Super Bowl and MTV's Unplugged. In addition, members of KISS put on a yearly convention called KISS-Con, where fans from around the world have the opportunity to meet the superstars.
Rocking and rolling all night long has always been the anthem of KISS, and it seems to have as much staying power as their favorite drink - chocolate milk, at least three glasses a day.
