Standing Bear (1834 - 1908) was a Ponca Native American Indian chief who successfully argued in U.S. District Court in 1879 that American Indians are "persons within the meaning of the law" and have the rights of citizenship. His Indian name was "MoNchu NoNzhiN," (MoNcu - grizzly, NoNzhiN - to stand). Because he showed unusual abilities, he became a chief at an early age.
