Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan is a model of consistency at right back and has been quite outstanding under the management of Rafael Benitez.


Signed by Gerard Houllier from Fulham in the summer of 2003 his debut season at Anfield was hit by injuries and it is fair to say the jury was out on him by many Liverpool fans.

Then when Benitez went back to Spain to sign right back Josemi there was much speculation regarding Finnan's Anfield future. However, to his credit he quickly showed he was the man for the right back slot and is now one of the first names on Benitez's team-sheet.

He played a major part in the games leading up to Liverpool winning the Champions League before injury forced him off the field at half-time in Istanbul.

Finnan also had a superb 2005/06 season and was part of the team that won the FA Cup.

Finnan started his career at non-league Welling before moving into league football with Birmingham under Barry Fry and Notts County. It was actually Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan who brought Steve Finnan to Fulham from Notts County for just 600,000 in November 1998.
