Boyhood Liverpool fan Harry Kewell has been out of action for the majority of the 2006/07 season as he is recovering from Septic Arthritis, a bacterial infection in the joints of his left foot.


Australian international Kewell fulfilled a dream when he joined the Anfield club in July 2003 from Premiership rivals Leeds United, but unfortunately a series of injury problems have hampered his Anfield career.

His most consistent season was 2005/06 when he was getting a good run of games in a row and scored some great goals including a fine strike against Everton. Kewell also produced a man of the match performance in the FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea, but like the previous season in a major final was forced to leave the field in Cardiff with an injury.

Gerard Houllier fought hard to secure the services of Kewell who he felt would add more flair, width and imagination to the Liverpool team.

His debut season at Anfield was mixed. He settled in well and scored 11 goals but the second half of the season from January 2004 onwards he was playing through the pain barrier with an injured ankle.

Kewell turned down approaches and indeed big money offers from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea to join Liverpool.

Harry started his footballing life at the New South Wales Football Academy in Australia in August 1994 before he was spotted by Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson, and joined the Elland Road club in 1996. It was Wilkinson who handed Kewell his debut at the age of 17 when he appeared as a substitute against Middlesbrough.

Kewell went on to become a major star at Leeds and was widely regarded as one of the best players in the Premiership. He is versatile, can score and create goals, has pace in abundance and can beat defenders for fun.

His best spell at Leeds was under David O'Leary when Harry was named PFA Young Footballer of the Year and Leeds Player of the Year for 1999/2000.
