The real name of Arachne is Julia Carpenter.
A secretive government group called the Commission on Superhuman Activities decided to create their own superhero. A federal agent named Valerie Cooper met her old college friend Julia Carpenter in Denver, and convinced her to be part in an "athletic study", where she was unknowingly a test subject for their experiments. The experimental treatments included extensive training in espionage and hand-to-hand combat as well as "accidental" injections of a formula incorporating rare Amazon jungle plants and spider venoms, which gave Julia superhuman powers.
Her abilities include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes. She also has heightened senses, and she can sense vibrations like a spider in its web. Julia also has two psionic-based abilities: She is able to cling to vertical surfaces and may utilize psi-webs. By using psychokinetic energy, she can bind ambient free-floating molecules into strands of solid force. Her psi-webs can be formed from a distance and can be used to wrap enemies, as she may control the movement of her webbing mentally, or focused into narrow web-lines that she can swing from.
