The cheese is named after its producers, Ben and Fierce Gouda who come from Holland. In 1994 they decided to settle in New Zealand and set up a small dairy near Hamilton. Today they produce the number of cheeses based on traditional Holland recipes. This is a boulder-shaped, semi-hard cheese made from cow's milk. The cheese has aroma of almonds and the flavor is rich and nutty. The period of ripening is about one year and during this time the cheeses are regularly turned and brushed by hands. There are several kinds of Gouda, plain, or flavored with cumin, cloves or pepper. Meyer Vintage Gouda is very popular and it also won a prize at the New Zealand Cheese Awards.
