This is not because of his playing skills, but plainly for the fact that no one else wanted the captainhood after Harkness had mentioned that he'd be interested in it. This might have something to do with the fact that after 41 games he still hasn't got promoted once, until now as he becomes a lance corporal alongside with the assignment into the captainry.
Jim Harkness, the official bad boy of the Commandos, has been kicking and fouling and arguing with the refs and shouting and beating and hitting the players of opposing teams for fifty games, and still he continues. For enduring all this even though often being the target of the opposing team, he is awarded a promotion to full corporal.
