Coleman was charged or wanted for questioning in assaults on at least 20 people in 13 separate attacks, including seven murders. Coleman received four death sentences from three Midwest states: Illinois, Ohio (two times), and in Indiana. At the time of his execution he was the only condemned person in the country to have death sentences in three states.
