I am a firm advocate that society rarely knows what is best for it's ultimate preservation, and indeed society will often vote to maintain the status quo or relax the controls purely because it is convenient for them right now.
Sadly this is a little like a three sibling children instructing their mother to remove all fruit and veg from their diet , and replacing it with huge amounts of refinded sugar. Children know what they like, but not what they NEED!
Same can be said of society, people will vote for tax cuts and relaxation of many laws because they will profit from it now, but they will soon complain when the government cuts back on investment in infrastructure, or over-borrows and causes inflationary problems later...all because they pandered to the lack of judgement of the masses.
Some decisions have to be made with a firm fatherly hand, the survival of the society is greater than the survival of the individual.
