Thenard doesn't have the most scrupulous of pasts; he joined the legion in the dead of night with police hounding the surrounding city, refusing to answer any questions. Luckily, this is the exact kind of fellow that the legion wanted among their ranks, and so he was shipped off to the fortress where he wouldn't cause any trouble. In the weeks of training leading up to the disbanding of the legion he showed a strange attraction to hand-to-hand combat, with weaponry or without.
