Although he was bricked away in a tomb, the evil emanating from the ring he wore pulsed through the walls of his prison into the world. A group of cultists tore down the walls to his cell, and found a very hungry vampire who had not fed for a very long time. After killing all the cultists, he set off on his way, hoping everyone had forgotten both him and the Von Carstein ring.

After arriving at the nearest civilization, he was informed that there was to be a blood bowl game between a group and Vampires and a group of Khemri. He almost fled the scene, but was then told that the Vampires were of the Order of the Blood Dragon. Having once been a Knight himself, he was very interested in these creatures, and decided to watch the match.

During the game, the Duchesse de Brionne was seriously injured, and it tore at Jerek's heart. After the match, Jerek went to the Red Knight and volunteered to take her place for the next match. The Red Knight challenged Jerek on the spot, and although Jerek was rusty from all the years of being locked away, he was able to do quite well in the duel. The Red Knight begrudgingly accepted Jerek's offer, despite the fact that his bloodline was different, but the Red Knight made sure to let Jerek know that the arrangements would be temporary.
