Legend tells of a wandering, itinerant dumpling hawker who roamed the Old World from town to town. Few details were recalled of his appearance: a wizened Cathayan in a hooded cloak, glittering black eyes set in an elongated face of leathery skin, and a long scraggly beard that resembled a goat's. Yet those who heard him speak remembered a mellifluous, rich, and honeyed voice. On arriving in a new town, the empty-handed peddler would disappear into the Poor Quarter of the town to source supplies. Shortly after, he would appear at the local market to sell his wares. Stored in bamboo steamers, these dumplings had a tantalising aroma and fantastical appearance: a sliver of pink bathing in rich, golden broth, peeking through a delicate covering of silvery, translucent wrapping, atop a green leaf, shrouded by purple-tinged steam. On consuming these wondrous delicacies, people would experience a powerful, overwhelming sense of liberation. Some would begin to sing, dance, or partake in food or drink, while others spoke lewdly, or acted in more licentious or violent ways. Most strangely of all, a few would be overcome by an all-consuming desire to play Blood Bowl (these individuals would disappear, never to be seen again unless it was in Blood Bowl stadia). It is rumoured that this may account for the origin of the Wanton Dumplings. Consumers passionately proclaimed the dumplings’ unparalleled unique flavour, texture, and umami, although the taste had an undertone that was strangely familiar yet slightly unsettling. Despite this, people craved more, word would spread, and the dumplings continued to be devoured. The growing crowd’s behaviour would become increasingly unfettered and aberrant, until the marketplace would inevitably degenerate into a full-scale riot. The City Guard (sometimes accompanied by Witch Hunters) would descend upon a scene of utter wanton chaos in search of the instigator. However they would find nothing, except empty, broken bamboo steamers and a lingering hint of musk in the air, that is, until they searched the Poor Quarter... |
