Coming Back - a cautionary tale

Gather 'round, children. Come closer, and I will tell you what I told your parents when they were little, on a night not unlike this one.

A tale about heroes. You love heroes, yes? They are strong, couragious, noble and good. They slay monsters, fight demons, rescue princesses and heal the ill.

Heros go where normal folk like you and I would never dare. They brave the unknown, explore the deepest caves, find the most exotic treasures...

Yes, heroes are something to dream about. But this is not a tale about their adventures. Not about heroism. It is about the heroes themselves.

There was a ragtag group of young, aspiring adventurers once. All sorts of misfits, social underdogs, outcasts.. For some reason they banded together and instead of resorting to banditry, as it is so often the case under these circumstances, they started to train and to hire themselves out for all sorts of oddjobs. When they had enough money for a bit of basic gear, like weapons, armor, potions and whatnot, they began to travel, to seek out danger, glory and riches.

Such were the humble beginnings of the group you all heard tales about. We will not say their name here, it would not be right.

Their group grew, both in members and experience. Soon, people had started to hear rumors at least, and their jobs would get more lucrative. They rose in standing and fame, songs were written and sung about their adventures and achievements.

Until, one day, they came back from a long and hard journey. They were charged with a mission of utmost importance, or so the rumor went. For months they were gone, possibly deep behind the enemy lines for some kind of sabotage, or even assassination of key members of the army. Yes, child, the hordes of Chaos have armies, generals, a structure of sorts.

Anyway. They came back. Almost all of them. Of their mission, there was neither word of success nor failure. They simply did not talk about it. Or anything, really. Gloomy eyes stared from hardened faces. Gone was the laughter, the twinkle of mischief in their eyes. They stopped taking work, disconnected from their friends and separated themselves from most of society as a whole.

At the rare occassion of one of them being seen in public places, people noticed the rude tone, antisocial behaviour and a rage, barely kept at bay. They became afraid. Afraid of the heroes they once adored.

When those tragic figures entered the spotlight again, this time as a dark and brutal team of bloodbowl players, they were barely recognized.

You see, children.. sometimes... sometimes heroes come back... wrong.
