Demon The word demon was derived from the Latin word daemn meaning spirit, and Greek words daemon or daimon meaning divine or supernatural power. In Greek mythology the words daemon and daimon were also used to mean an inferior deity, such as a deified hero. Demon has also been used as a term for people who are extremely skillful and hard-working. It did not originally have an evil connotation and was even used as a term for God or theos. During the Medieval times the Christians usually thought of all supernatural things that weren't directly explained as holy by the bible as an evil thing, usually dealing with the Devil or fallen angels (including all pagan gods). Now demon usually refers to a constantly tormenting force, or an evil spirit. There are demons (evil spirits) in several religions. Demons in Judaism are derived in ancient Middle Eastern and Zoroastrain mythology after the sixth century B.C. Demons are called "shedim" in Hebrew. These demons were believed to be foreign deities and "se'irim" (hairy demons). There were several demon lords in Judaism such as Satan, Belial, and Mastema. Each of the demon lords ruled over several demons. Demons would cause mental illness and physical disorder, and they were believed to inhabit deserts, ruins, and graves. Demons of Christianity were based on Jewish, Gnostic, and pagan religions. During the Medieval and Reformation periods there were several demons created. Some were associated with the seven deadly sins: Lucifer (pride), Mammon (avarice), Asmodeus (lechery), Satan (anger), Beelzebub (gluttony), Leviathan (envy), and Belphegor (sloth). Islamic demons were based on Jewish and Christian demons. These demons are headed by Iblis (the Devil) and the most common type of Islamic demon is known as djinn (the demons of the desert). Genies are the most recognizable type of djinn. Djinn are known for being powerful enough to grant wishes, giant in size, and often have huge horns. Hindu demons are called asuras. The most well known of these demons are nagas (serpent-women), Ahi (the demon of drought), Kamsa (a demon lord), raksasas, and piscacas. Raksasas haunt cemeteries and attack saintly men. Pisacas haunt places where there was murder and unjustified death. Buddhist demons distract people from reaching Nirvana (enlightenment). The most well-known Buddhist demons include Mara (a demon lord) and his daughters: Rati (desire), Raga (pleasure), and Tanha (restlessness). |
