One day, a member of an ogre tribe was out looking for small furry creatures to devour when it had a brief but eventful encounter with a falling tree, the net result being the ogre unable to travel very far, what with the aforementioned tree being on top of him. After hours of deep consideration, the ogre decided to attempt to eat the tree instead of his own limbs. He made the discovery that would change the ogre, and his tribe, forever.

Maple trees. Mmmmm.

After convincing the rest of his sceptical tribe to taste the tree, they all agreed that it was better than raw flesh (the tribe not having advanced to the point where fire was something other than pretty lights) and swore off meat on the proviso that there were plenty of the tasty trees around. Even with the legendary ogrish appetite, the need for food no longer controlled their movements, and clubbing people to the ground seemed kind of pointless when they weren't subsequently eaten. However, with the help of a nearby goblin tribe, they quickly found it was amusing, and in a rare show of generosity decided to share this humour with the citizens of the world.

And the Tree-Munchers were born.
