Little beknowst to the humans who first colonised Mars, the forefathers of these twolegged rats were indeed the first permanent inhabitans of the Red Planet.
It all started during the early preparations of the colonisation, when an unwatchful engineer allowed for a handful of rats to embark on one of the supply ships.

These vermin indeed had a pleasant voyage as they hid in the cargo bay carrying food to the engineers presently on Mars. As the supplies were being unloaded the
rats sneaked out and hid in the storage buildings where they continued there carefree life. Eventually the engineers returned back to Earth as the preparations for
the permanent inhabitants to come now was complete. But as there no longer were any human eyes to watch the complex machinery of the Martian base,
there were bound to be trouble. Just a decade or so before the first colonists arrived, one of the reactors supplying power to the base had a malfunction.

This was nothing serious and would easily be fixed as soon as the first colonists arrived, but for the rats this was a blessing in disguise. Many rats died
of the radiation emitted by the reactor, but the few who survived grew stronger and bigger. And as rats have a very high procreation rate - up to a half a dozen
generations in a year - it did not take long before they had grown immune to this radioactive threat. Indeed, the radioactivity enhanced them in various ways.

Some even became tolerant to the harsh environment outside, and these rats soon ventured out to build a vast network of tunnels and burrows in the
surrounding hillsides. A few rats even became bipedal, which later when the colonists arrived lead to stories of "ghost rats". But the most important change
of all was that of inteeligence. Even today the first intelligent rat, "Big Cheese" (a name derived from his size and the first word he learned off of a large crate of supplies)
is a named revered among the Martian rat community.

When finally the human base was inhabited with scores of colonists the rats had evolved into something utterly different from the first rats that scrambled off of the
ships decades before. And when the Martian Blood Bowl League was established the rats (to the surprise of the colonists) emerged from their burrows and promptly
signed up their meanest and strongest bipeds. Even though their memories of being "ordinary" rats are all but gone, they have a strange collective memory
of their time in the cargo hold of the supply ship that brought them to Mars. And it is from that memory that they derive their names as the cargo by happenstance was mainly made up of cheese...
