Danté Darkan, heir to a modest estate in Averland, spent most of his natural life as a scholar at the College of Altdorf. He was a schemer, but prone to outbursts of anger. He enjoyed the finer things in life that his position afforded him, yet found enjoyed destruction. It wasn't a matter of whether he would be corrupted by Chaos, but simply a matter of which of the four Chaos Gods would claim him. The Chaos Gods fought over who would initiate Darkan to their ranks of champions not because he would be a great leader or a famous warrior, but simply because Darkan was unusual in that he was the perfect candidate for all four of the Ruinous Powers. Whichever God managed to corrupt him would have gloating rights in making Darkan choose them over the other three. Darkan joined a Slaaneshi pleasure cult... but caught a foul disease from an inn they frequented, which was found to be infested with Nurglings. He arranged to purchase a potion from an apothecary, who was secretly a puppet of Tzeench... but the apothecary was slain before the meeting, by a commoner who flew into a bloodthirsty rage for an unexplained reason. While the four Chaos Gods of the north fought each other, another was watching over Darkan. Malal, the renegade fifth Chaos God, "arranged" for Darkan to be called back to Averland, by killing his father. When Darkan arrived at his family estate, he was set upon by Malal's assassin, who plunged a blade deep into his heart. Darkan's soul rose from his corpse, and Malal reached forth to take it. However, Darkan's sudden movement across the Empire had not gone unnoticed by the other Chaos Gods, and they each grabbed at Darkan's spirit as it emerged, hoping to tear it away from each other's grasp. However, in the act of the five Chaos Gods touching a mortal soul at once, they imbued him with some power of his own. The shade of Darkan lashed out at the Chaos Gods, who were each so shocked at their prey fighting back that their grip slipped - enough for Darkan to escape, if only for a short while. He needed to possess a body, to tie his soul to a mortal shell and therefore temporarily beyond the grasp of the Chaos Gods. He jumped into the mind of the first Chaotic being he could find, hurling the conciousness he had displaced to Gork and Mork. Why Gork and Mork? He had possessed one of their children, a fairly normal Orc, who was around Blackfire Pass at the time of Darkan's death. In the confusion, Gork and Mork impeded the process of the five Chaos Gods chasing after "Darkan", who was now one of their boyz, at least in appearance. Darkan took the brief respite to declare himself Chaos Undivided, whereupon his soul was bound in part to each of the Gods, but to no one master. Foiled by a mere mortal, the Chaos Gods agreed never to speak of the incident again. Darkan was now in a different predicament. He couldn't stomach the thought of acting like an Orc for the rest of his days, but neither could he survive anywhere but within an Orc warband, as he was now kill-on-sight to any other race in the Old World, possibly including Orcs of other tribes. Fortunately for him, he found he could dominate a score of his greenskinned brethren, not enough to make him his own warband, but plenty for a Blood Bowl team. Now Darkan's Defiance plays in the widespread FUMBBL league, attracting hordes of greenskin and chaos fans alike, come to see the mortal who dared defy their Gods, and lived to tell the tale. |
