The original eleven Torpedoes were miners working for the Olivo Mining Company, based in the Tilean town of Cicero. The Torpedoes spent most of their time looking over the subpar mining the company's human workers had done and patching things up to prevent cave-ins, floods and other disasters. Normally, dwarves wouldn't brusk working for humans in such a manner, but since the pay was abnormally high, the dwarves found it within themselves to swallow some measure of racial pride. Their patience ran out when the Olivo Company decided to send its miners into a dangerous stretch of Bretonnia to mine for diamonds. The hilly area the miners worked in was infested with trolls, skaven, beastmen and other creatures who constantly harried the mining crews. Complaints to the management in Tilea by both the human and dwarf workers went unheeded, as did all requests for hazard pay or additional guards. Morale at the mining camp dropped. Initially, the dwarves were just going to leave. They later, however, saw an opportunity to make themselves rich and get revenge for their ill treatment at the same time. First, the dwarves talked the human workers into going along with their schemes, an easy task considering how badly the workers had been mistreated. Next, the dwarves gave some of the uncut diamonds the group had been mining to some local trolls to guard the encampment and keep other monsters out. A letter was then sent by the mining camp foreman to Amani Aiello, the head of the Olivo company, describing an impossibly large find of precious gems of all types. The letter had the desired effect: Aiello and most of the higher-ups in the company showed up personally to view the "glittering cavern of wealth beyond imagining" described in the letter. As soon as the management set up, they were set upon by trolls and angry miners. Word was sent back to Cicero that the management's travelling company had never made it to the mine and had probably been waylayed by some monster. Upon returning to Cicero, the members of the mining company, who basically controlled its day-to-day-function, decided to scrap mining and go into the more lucrative business of crime. The group got into protection rackets, sack beatings for hire, smuggling and underground gambling halls. The Torpedoes were formed once the syndicate made enough start-up capital to hire a coach, buy equipment and get players to complement the company dwarves who were willing to risk their safety in exchange for the potential for huge profits playing Blood Bowl. The team is run purely as a profit-making venture by the syndicate: as such, the Torpedo players tend to have little use for concepts like honor or sportsmanship . Winning, at all costs, is the Torpedo mantra. So far, the Torpedoes have worked well together, earning accolades from the "family" back home. |
