Once, long ago, there was a game played in the deep parts of the jungle, and it was called Tachli. It was a brutal sport played with a rubber ball. The players kicked and hipped the ball around a court surrounded by massive stadiums where onlookers sweated and cheered and gambled on the combatants. Stone hoops 10 meters off the ground lined the walls just below the first rows of stone benches, and the teams kicked the balls through them or whacked them in with tails. Tachli was a dangerous game to play, and when the time came to make contact with those outside the jungle, the scaly ones quickly realized that the fragile humans and goblins and skaven would quickly be crushed, if not by the towering saurii then by the ball itself, ten pounds of solid rubber and kicked at blinding speeds about the court. There was a game already played by the westerners that proved to be remarkably similar to tachli, however... That first match was a confused one. A team composed entirely of elite kroxigor tachli players arrived on the pitch and caused a halfling riot. The kroxigors, too stupid to realize that this was not a part of the game, slaughtered and subsequently ate over 14 haflings, and the inclusion of lizardman teams was delayed until an interpreter could be found. After the incident kroxigors were almost banned from the league but the slann pulled some kind of backroom deal and convinced the commissioner to allow one on the field - a decision his predecessors still have occasion to regret to this day. Blood bowl has become quite the entertainment for the incredibly slothful slann, and owning a successful blood bowl team is a mark of status and a source of influence in the slann councils. The Hexoatl Coatls are the first lizardman team that has left the jungle without much tachli experience, and are relatively unskilled. They are owned by one of the youngest slann who hopes to increase his position amongst his brethren. They possess a lot of raw talent, but aren't as accustomed to near-fatal injuries on the pitch as they would be if they were already tachli pros. Of course, if they fail him, their master Cihuacoatl may very well sacrifice them as an appeasement to the creator, so they are all very motivated to succeed, if not at winning then at least at entertaining... |
