However, the hardest of the hardcore gyms are not well known and often cannot even be found in the Yellow Pages. These are usually basements, garages and otherwise abandoned warehouses, funded by the members themselves out of pure love of lifting. These vanishing institutions operate with the tacit understanding that once the term "Fitness Center" is tacked onto the title, the atmosphere required for hardcore training is corrupted and the necessary rituals of the champions must be curtailed.

The training headquarters of powerlifting's top elite, the Westside Barbell Club, certainly fits this hardcore template. Westside Barbell is located in a part of Columbus, Ohio, most people only visit if they need to get a cash advance, buy an adult video or sell some of their plasma. Not only is the gym not listed in the phone book, but it also has no sign or exterior markings indicating what takes place inside of its cinderblock walls.

Westside does not sell memberships. Lifters train here by invitation only and that invitation is extended on a provisional basis--new members are given a six-month trial to show owner and trainer Louie Simmons that they can increase their lifts to the level that he believes they are capable; otherwise, they are shown to the door.
