Rottnest Reavers

Away back in 1696, Norse explorer William de Vlamingh was charting the waters west of the Southern Wastes when a small island was sighted. The hardy explorer promptly landed a boat upon its sandy shores, where upon he was savagely assaulted by a horde of large rodents with smiling faces and crazy eyes. He laid about himself with a cudgel struggling back into his small boat and rowing to safety. Upon climbing back aboard his ship he was heard to say "Dem dere rotts was yuge, a whole bloody nest of 'em."
And so the island became known as The Rotts Nest. Over time simply Rottnest.

Many many years later after the mainland area was demonsterised, sanitised and colonized, inquisitive folk wondered what lay upon this Rottnest Island, reports of an explorer being attacked there many years ago were laughed at, so they set out to sea in small boats to take a look. On landing they found a quiet gentle species of rodent like animals on an island of beaches, reefs, and, well, actually not much else. A pleasant enough place to visit for a day or a week it quickly became a favourite tourist destination. For some unknown reason they named the happy little furry residents Quokkas.

Another body was found today on Rottnest Island taking the total count of those killed in the past week to 15. Local magistrates remain baffled as to what is causing such savage wounds to appear on the victims on an island with no predators. All victims were located in-land away from possible shark attack, the only reasonable explanation is that some, thing, some great monster has found its way out to the island and is feeding off the human tourists. No tracks have been found.

As before the victims iconograph was located nearby, but no clues were gleaned from any of the images. The last photo shows a happy smiling person with one of the beloved Quokkas.

The entire island population is being evacuated and fears are held that without the monsters food source the local Quokka population will be under severe threat.
