Situated in a high, desolate valley at the Southern end of the Black Spine Mountains, the Fortress of Damnation is a bleak and intimidating stronghold - a place where mortals fear to tread. Originally one of the very few Imperial colonies in the dark continent of Naggaroth, over time the pervasive evil that saturates the land twisted it to become a nightmarish reflection of its previous form. Gradually, the surrounding farmland became barren; cattle became diseased or went insane; and the local water supplies either dried up or became toxic and extremely hazardous to drink.

No mortal remembers exactly how the vampiric curse began. Some say that an agent of the Sylvanian Vampires infiltrated the colony and spread the sickness, others that, in their desperation and faced with almost certain starvation, some of the colonists turned to cannibalism and worship of the dark arts - selling their souls to live on in undeath. Whatever the history, the fortress is now inhabited only by a sadistic cadre of Vampire Counts and their mindless slaves. The only mortals that voluntarily set foot in the valley are either ignorant or foolish, and they are invariably never seen again.

To feed their insatiable desire for living flesh, the Vampires often wander beyond the confines of their valley in search of victims. They have been known to pick off the occasional band of Dark Elf scouts, which venture out of the nearby Wrath Gate entrance to the Undercaverns, as well raiding High Elf settlements on the fringes of the Arnheim colony. Of the captives that are taken back to the Fortress, the lucky ones have their minds wiped clean and are turned into Thralls to act as servants to the Vampires. The unlucky ones are given to Pinhead, the most sadistic and depraved of the monsters, to be used for his amusement and 'experiments'.

The really unlucky ones, however, are trained up to become linemen for the Vampires' Blood Bowl team, Dark Sacriledge. Eternal unlife can get rather dull and even Vampires need some outlet to entertain themselves. Hence, some of the younger Vamps have organized a Blood Bowl team, which travels the length and breadth of Naggaroth to take on the biggest, baddest teams it can find (oh, and Snoqualmie Pollywogs). If you meet them on the pitch, don't be afraid. They're just there to have a good time and, as long as you give them the ball, they won't try to steal your eternal soul (honest).
