In 1908, St George almost joined the Big League. It is still unclear as to why they turned down the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). In 1921, St George finally entered the Sydney premiership losing their first game to Glebe 4-3. In 1928, the St George 'Dragon Slayers' won their first minor premiership but despite many semi-final appearances, St George didn't win their first premiership until 1941. They won another in 1949. The St George Dragons cemented themselves as one of the world's greatest sporting clubs when they won 11 straight premierships between 1956-1966. They were undefeated in 1959. Immortals such as Graeme Langlands, John Raper and Reg Gasnier were just a few of the greats who wore the red and white during these golden years. No other sporting team in the world has been able to match this record and it unlikely that it will ever happen again. In 1977, a young Saints team with coach Harry Bath defeated Parramatta 22-0 in the 'Grand Final replay' after the first Grand Final was drawn 9-9. St George, known as 'Bath's Babes' won again in 1979 defeating Canterbury 17-13. St George played in five more Grand Finals, the most recent one being in 1999 as the 'St George - Illawarra Dragons' following Rugby League's first successful merger. To this day, the St George Dragons are probably the most well known Rugby League name in the world.
