In the Neuestadt district of the Empire city of Nuln, Alfonse Valantina and Dirk Huyderman, both of their respective infamous crime families, had just struck the biggest smuggling deal in the history of the Nuln criminal underworld. It is a rare occasion that Nuln's various crime families work together, but the profits of their success show that they could accomplish more as a whole. The issue then became, how could they spend their newfound wealth without attracting the attention of the authorities? Their families already owned half the businesses in Neuestadt, and those wouldn't be enough to launder the gold. They needed something that could look like it could rake in immense amounts of cash. That's when it hit them. Literally, they walked around the street corner into a game of Street Blood Bowl and the ball clocked Dirk right in the face. Right then and there the pair hired on the best of those street bowl players (most of them were just dock workers and thugs playing in their spare time, so "best" might not be the word) and told their personal lackies to go purchase blood bowl kits, as there would be a new team in Nuln! Excited to have a new avenue to spend their cash, the pair got their new completely legal team, the Neuestadt Nobles, registered with the local Nuln Blood Bowl league and had everything planned out! Well, except for the fact that they actually had to play a few matches for the scheme to look legitimate. How hard could this be? __________________________________________ In a few days time the Nuln minor leagues had a friendly match set up between the Neuestadt Nobles and a traveling dwarf team, known by the commoners of Nuln as Small's Dwarves. They were such named due to their coach gaining the unfortunate nickname of Smalls from the Nulners and the commoners not being able to pronounce the Kazalid name of the team. Alfonse and Dirk, as well as many of their henchmen, only knew Blood Bowl from what they watched on Cabalvision. Luckily the few players they hired from the friendly street match were able to show them the basics in the few days leading up to the match. With under a week of training, the team took to the pitch against a pack of beer crazed lunatics (as practice for the match against the dwarves the next day). The Nobles made sure to bribe the ref well enough to skew the coin flip in the Nobles' favor and they were able to receive first. While Blood Bowl was new to them, a good street brawl wasn't, and the Nobles opened up with a cannonade of kicks right to the wazzoks. With the three players of the dwarf line of scrimmage stunned on the ground, the Nobles blasted up the pitch in a textbook cage formation! As the dwarves moved in to intercept, Alfonse and Dirk sent their thugs to go hold them off. Outnumbered two to one, the Valantina and Huyderman thugs didn't stand a change and were plowed into the dirt. The dwarves, being angry about the dishonorable opening to the match, stood over them ready to hit them again as punishment. To their astonishment, the downed Nobles players gladly stayed on the ground, knowing that to hit a downed player was a foul, and the bribed ref was just waiting to call out a dwarf for cheating. The dwarves, not willing to have their honor bismirched, refused to hit the downed thugs and cursed them as they turned their attentions to the ball, which was strolling into the endzone in the hands of the Huyderman employed thrower, Wolfgang Holzer! Happy with their first touchdown going into the second half, spirits were high, but the dwarves were hungry for revenge. The dwarves slowly and methodically carved a path through the Nobles' defense and left them scrambling to get out of their way. Not keen to be in the way of the dwarves and their touchdown, the Nobles stayed out of the way and the dwarves scored their equalizer with only a few minutes left in the game. Without time left to score, some parting punches were made on the line of scrimmage as the clock ran out and the game ended in a tie, which was better than the Nobles had hoped for! Having had a bit of fun, both Alfonse and Dirk poured much of their extra cash into better kits, hiring trainers for the team, and an apothecary in case those dwarves ever came back with a grudge! ____________________________________________ The Nobles continued playing local matches against some of the teams actually owned by the nobility of Nuln from the Altstadt district. While they didn't meet much success, they honed their skills. Soon, Alfonse Valantina's third cousin, Mario, came to him pleading for help in getting rid of some gang trying to collect on a debt he couldn't pay. At first Alfonse was going to offer to pay with the plentiful funds he had from the smuggling business, but then Mario explained the debt wasn't in gold, but his soul! Mario had sought forbidden secrets of an ex-lover and was stupid enough to offer his soul to a cult of Tzeentch in exchange. Before Alfonse could come up with a solution, the cult was at his door for Mario. In a desperate attempt to save Mario's immortal soul, Alfonse challenged Tzeentch's Minions to a game of Blood Bowl, the stakes being Mario's soul if the Nobles won, and the souls of the entire team if they lost! The Minion's agreed. Upon hearing of the deal Alfonse made without consulting him, Dirk was furious. Rather than prepare for the match, the Huydermans and Valentinas were at eachother's throats over the ordeal. Match day came before they knew it, and the Huyderman players begrudgingly followed the Valentinas out of the city to a hidden Blood Bowl field in the forest. At first they breathed a sigh of relief thinking the cultists wouldn't show up, but then from the darkness crept the cultist team, prodding along a fearsome mutated Rat Ogre and Chaos Troll! Angry, terrified, and not at all ready for this match, the Nobles took to the line of scrimmage. By a surprising twist of fate considering they were facing minions of Tzeentch, the Nobles won the toin coss and chose to receive. It seems as if the Minions had planned for this though, knowing the Nobles would waste their receiving drive bickering amongst eachother. That's exactly what happened, the Huyderman and Valentina players separated into their own groups, each trying to push one side of the field thinking they made the better choice. Separated, neither side made progress and soon the mutated monsters of Tzeentch were tearing through them, sending both Huydermans and Valentinas to the team apothecary who couldn't keep up with all the injuries, even Alfonse himself was laid low by a chaos orc and had to be dragged off the field with a smashed ankle by his bodyguards. Oddly enough, only having Dirk left to leave the team seemed to be their key to cohesion. During halftime, Dirk gave an inspiring speech and the Nobles performed their first successful blitz at the kickoff of the second half. Nearly catching their own kickoff, the Nobles drove into the Minon's half and fought tooth and nail to recover the ball! While Dirk was injured and taken out of the game during this fighting, his men were so inspired that they dodged past the Rat Ogre and Chaos Troll to run for the endzone and score! Distrought at this twist of fate, Tzeentch's Minions lost their composure and failed to recover the ball in the short time left of the second half, giving the Nobles a 1-0 victory, and the soul of Mario! The team made their way back to Nuln, inspired that they were able to defeat a cult of Chaos, hardened from the experience, and with a new Bodyguard player on the team for Alfonse...well the Nobles did just win the rights to Mario's soul, you didn't think they'd just give it back to him right? ______________________________________________ |
