Secret Draft League

Varangian: Member of the Byzantine imperial guard founded in 988 by Vladimir of Kiev (955–1015), which lasted until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The name (meaning ‘the sworn’) came to be used for a widespread Swedish people in eastern Europe and the Balkans. From the late 11th century, the Byzantine guard included English and Norman mercenaries, as well as Scandinavians. It was feared and respected as an elite military force. Attracted by the Bloodwieser Babes, the money and the violence [not always in that order], the Varangian's hired Coach Elan to field a team of Rookies in Season 19 of the Regional Southern Wastes League. In their first Season, the Team offended Nuffle who assisted every opponent while forfiets ensured that the lads learnt and earnt very little with 3/0/3 out of 9 possible Regional games. With a Wildcard entry into the Southern Wastes Snorrheim Conference (Season 20) , the team suffered from lack of skill and was brutalised with a 0/0/7 record. Fans left in droves as the coach conceded matches against highly skilled opponents in a last ditch effort to preserve what little ability the team had. The only bright spot of the season was the improvement in Vermundr (who apparently carries the team on his back) and the hope of relegation. Season 21 saw relegation into Mr Whippy's Regional Conference, with a 3/0/2 result. Unfortunately Nuffle and the Gods of FUMBBL have cursed the team with statistically improbable bad luck. After a brilliant 5 Nil victory in their first game, the second game of the season saw the return of Nuffle and the fickle finger of fate, with 1 player badly hurt, 4 players seriously injured (most permanently) and 1 barely revived after a massive bash fest by a barely pubsecent and untrained nurgle team. The coach is not happy and fired Loki for joking around post match and both Gyoi and Hrolliefr for lack of match fitness. The third game of the season saw Vermundr slip and die pushing his luck that one step too far against a Skaven opponent that took advantage of the pisspoor luck of the team and diminished numbers to slide home 2-3. AVE VERMUNDR - THE VALKYRIE FLY YOU TO ODIN'S HALL. The remaining games of the Season have reflected both the continuation of the now proven Curse impacting every basic play, and general apathy by the players. The Coach has advised the Commission thaht he is delisting all players and putting the franchise into suspension at the end of teh Season. Coach Elan is hoping to put the team and his tattered reputation behind him, moving on into a new draft and fresh challenge. Fired after failing to meet fitness tests after the team's embarrasing second last game, Karli has been replaced by two local drunks who managed to find the lost team armour. The team and coach have decided that rather than trying to win, the objective of their last game is to hurt at least one damn Dark Elf before all players retire into obscurity.
