Roster [L] Necromantic Horror

Chicago has struggled for two and a half decades. The last decade especially has seen a rash of new coaches in an attempt to return this once proud team to their former glory as the Monsters of the Midway.

Newly rich from last year's deep FC run with acclaimed Birmingham Badgers, Coach and dabbling necromancer Oryx Wild was sent in to replace the listless Loraxwolfsbane. For his own viewing pleasure Lorax had fired all of the teams players and hired strippers to take their places. Although their fan base nearly doubled, they sadly failed to win even a single game, and eventually stopped showing up to play at all.

At first, Coach Oryx was very satisfied with the team. Nevertheless it soon became clear that through excess and decadence they had become lazy and indolence ran riot. There was only one thing to do. He fired them all.

At first he re-hired the entire team as it was before the Bane Called Lorax, but they were no better than they had been for the last 20 years. So he killed most of them and raised them from the grave to play once more. Now that they feel no pain and are merely shambling extensions of Coach Oryx's twisted mind, they're much better than they were in life.

However, zombies and golems are slow and clumsy. With the cream of the crop, Coach Oryx forbore to kill them and instead turned some of them into werewolves (with the help of some lunatic friends) and forced the others into captivity, feeding them only on the flesh of the dead until they warped and changed into hunched, furtive ghouls.

Now Coach Oryx unleashes his horde, truly Monsters of the Midway once again, upon the unsuspecting NBFL...

Season 11 Intro:
Inaugural expansion season, see above. Rough start - the core is built up through the draft, but there is still some building to be done before we're ready for the big time. Season goals are to bring team record to .500, work on a playbook, and build up the wolves to a feared duo. There are a few more core skills lacking. Overall, first priority is investing in team infrastructure. Secondarily, terroize division and remove problem players. Lastly, make a name for the New Chicago.

Season 11 Reflection:
Beginning Draft Picks:
Spike wight Tackle, MB, SF, Guard
Meltdown golem Dodge, Tackle, MB, Guard
James Brown zombie +St, Block, Guard
Little Jon zombie Block, Guard

Overall Record 3-2-4 with a probable win in the form of an Ants forfeit.

I got emotional about a few games this season, particularly against 'Grue and Ritzi. Green Bay? Check. Mirror match? Check. On the whole my record is 3(1)-2-4 with this team, and I'm comfortable with that.
On the development side of things - I did well this season. No unlucky injuries. Core progress:

Wights: Spike has grown teeth and is more dangerous than ever now with pomb. the Major is in that awkward guard mb phase before he hits his stride. He has a chance of catching cold if there is a strong draft.

Golems: Meltdown is 1 spp away from blodge sf tackle mb. If the draft picks are kind, I'll have another golem, or perhaps a gardza with Guard.

Wolves: They've shown good progress, although nothing spectacular. Both are slow learners. Silver Bullet is still figuring out how to use Jump Up. He seems to be more of a scoring player - 5 tds and 2 cas - than Maneater, who with Tackle ran 2 tds and 6 cas. The benefits of jump up are hard to estimate - sometimes it seems utterly useless, especially without sidestep, and sometimes its the only thing that could save me. I haven't made up my mind about it yet. Maneater is solid.

Ghouls: Nice and expendable, giggity. Having sure hands removes a layer of insecurity and allows me to focus on the blocking. The Rat is quickly becoming one of my favorite players, and is really a part of the team's playstyle.

Overall, I'm stoked with progress. I'll hope for an exceptional player through the draft, clear injuries for the post season, and skill up the few rookies.

Then, the Monsters of the Midway are coming back.

Season XII Post-Draft reflection:

Draft Pick - Dan "the Man" Ryan golem block, dodge, mb, 45 spp

After looking back at my beginning picks, the season's development, and taking Ryan into consideration, I feel pretty satisfied. I had a plan going in - build a solid core of wights and golems, let the wolves build themselves. Some part of me was of course hoping for a juicy pomber wolf pick but I'm just as glad, I think, to have panned out this way.

Within the next 5 games I imagine that Dan "the Man" and Meltdown will both make it to guard and block, respectively, setting me up for a very solid bash side. 6 guards is not so many compared to an orc or dwarf side, perhaps. Nevertheless I've got 2 str4 blodge guards and a third str4 guard, as well as the obligatory pomber (who doubles nicely as my third sf guard). 4 MB and 2 claws stack up with three (or perhaps four, post-building) dirty players to help me sustain myself in the attrition game, and the mobility of the ghouls and wolves gives me a lot of options, as long as I'm able to hold the center.

I'm really looking forward to the development of the wolves. Of course a part of me hopes for a pomber wolf so that I, too, can join the easy street gang and mow down all who enter my path... but another part of me hopes for a really fun stat freak wolf, akin to Chainsaw's 10 3 4 8 blodge sure hands monstrosity. Or perhaps they'll both make it to legend with completely ordinary skills. Although there are many theories that wolves are only worth it if they get stats and doubles, I believe that even vanilla wolves are an important and worthy part of teh team, as long as they're supported by strong wights and golems.

Well, that's my reflection, for now.

On to Season XII!

Season XII reflection:

Looking back over my games this season, I'm amazed at how well I've done. In the first season, I felt very frustrated after nearly winning over KC, San Dogo, and Detroilet, but then losing, tying, and tying, respectively. I was pleasantly surprised to beat Ritzi, and of course I lost to GB (that darned grue... And it's so fluff appropriate that I always lose to my rival GB!). Second half I Was amazed to win so hard against Jeffro's Panthers, and even managed to tie Grue! Not that he has much of a team left right now...

I was mad that I lost to Detroilet - something about that team makes it so hard to beat - and very surprised that I tied Atlatl, and finally managed to beat Ritzi AGAIN!

If those three very close ties/losses in the first half had instead been victories, I would have ended up with a final score of 72, third place by 1 point. I'm pretty floored. Sure, I have some great players, but I am far far from what I would think of as a polished playoff team, and a very small number of dice is all that separated Chicago from one of the best scores in the league.

I'm starting to look at team management. I've rolled a lot of stats lately, and chosen to take them, which hasn't served me all that well. I feel a bit bloaty. I'm tempted to fire the wolves, but Jeffro's admonishments ring in my ears, and I don't REALLY like going with so little tackle. I'm also very tempted to fire teh +st ghoul, as he spends most of his time on the bench. The +ag wight is a great idea but in practice it's mostly wasted and I wish he had tackle and PO. I'm hoping to pick up a decent wight in the draft to replace Spike, who died very early in the season. Quite the shame there, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Overall I'm very lucky with 3/4 of my starting draftees, and even Dan Da Man is only -ma, a very manageable statloss on a blodge guard MB golem. He's 3 cas away from tackle! Very excited about that.

Anyway the team has a strong core. I'm not sure whether or not I'll do much culling, but a new season is coming up. We're still slowly building momentum, awaiting the appearance of a solid playmaker to drive the solid frame of this jetplane soaring into the atmosphere...

Goals for season XIII:
a player with tackle/po/mb
more dp, more fouling!
2 blodge guard MB tackle golems =D

Sat out for Season XIII due to BABY!

Season XIV moved cities, name changed to Denver Six-Foot-Under Club

Season XIV starting off with an acceptable tie against the formidable San Dogo Chompers. Kryten is a crafty opponent who is totally unafraid to make balls-to-the-walls plays, and of course humans are pretty good at that. His killer combo of Ryan Leaf + 2 well built catchers with 2+ catches is hard to suppress.

Honestly our game came down to dice, mostly. Sure, there was lots of strategy involved, and in the end I have to say I think Kryten won the positioning game. He very nearly won the whole game, too! A first turn blitz left me sputtering, and with the blockless pomber wolf eating rerolls, my average-but-not-amazing dice gave up an easy score to Kryten. Lots of shenanigans ensued, but I managed to equalize with two turns left. I set up a very passable defense, but a crazy missed-pass-to-diving-catch-in-the-rain-with-some-tz's-involved, along with a very well planned chainpush and some dodges (in tackle zones, with agi3!) led to a perfect score!

In the second half I was unable to use my wizard to ensure the score, but we both fumbbled around the sideline so much that no one got anywhere. Eventually Leaf fluffed a pickup, and an incredibly unlikely throw-in fell straight into the sopping wet hands of Major Wright. With no rolls failing (miraculously), and Kryten failing left and right, I managed to waltz into the endzone with no resistance. (K's dice were far from perfect but very, very nice the whole game... until it really, *really* mattered. Then they abandoned him hard). A very strange tie, but a fun game against an opponent who is somewhat more skilled than I, perhaps.

Demogorgon died and regen'd, perhaps an ausipicious start for this rather unusual draftee.
