Tau Ceramica of Vitoria, Spain, has always been among those clubs that has had the potential to impact European basketball, and in the last few years it has done just that. Club Deportivo Baskonia founded its basketball section in 1959 and started playing in the provincial division. It wasn't until the 1971-72 season when it started playing at the highest level of competition in Spain and has been a member of the professional Spanish League (ACB) since it creation in 1983. In 1985 Baskonia made its debut in European competition, and two years later Tau Ceramica arrived as the official sponsor and has remained with the team ever since. Despite Tau's becoming a household name in European basketball circles, it wasn't until recently that the team from Vitoria started to turn heads. It won its first Spanish Cup in 1995-96 and then again in 1998-99, and finally won the Saporta Cup after three consecutive finals in 1996 against PAOK of Greece. In 2000-01, Tau arrived at the Euroleague finals before coming up just short of the title, losing a best-of-five playoff series against mighty Kinder Bologna. The following year, Tau made a major statement in Spain by sweeping both Spanish titles, the King's Cup and the Spanish League title, its first. It also came within one game of qualifying for the Euroleague Final Four. The 2002-03 season was marked by a series of unfortunate injuries that prohibited the club from establishing a reliable nucleus. The one consolation was that the club did manage to arrive in the finals of of the Spanish King's Cup. Tau Ceramica, known all over Europe because of its ability to never give up, bounced back in 2003-04, winning the Spanish King's Cup and the Spanish League regular season. Tau was upset by Estudiantes in the Spanish League semis, and CSKA prevented the team from making it to its first-ever Final Four. Tau Ceramica can be counted among those clubs that will settle for nothing less than arriving at the top, and as such, aims to make more and bigger impact in 2004-05.
