Se il metal è una delle grandi famiglie del rock, e i Metallica sono la più compiuta manifestazione del metal, i Metallica sono uno dei gruppi rock più importanti di tutti i tempi.
Come ogni gruppo punk "è" i Sex Pistols e poi, eventualmente, anche "altro" (punk significa Sex Pistols); così ogni gruppo metal dopo il 1983 è i Metallica e poi, eventualmente (e qui inseriamo tutti i vari sottogeneri: death, doom, black, epic, power, gothic) anche "altro". Heavy-metal significa quella musica che suonano i Metallica. Perché il thrash e lo speed sono il minimo comune denominatore per tutti gli stili metal dall'83 in avanti. E thrash e speed i Metallica inventarono o istituzionalizzarono. I Metallica, con i Rolling Stones e pochi altri, sono tra i pochissimi casi di gruppo di musica popolare la cui fama è direttamente proporzionale alla propria importanza storica.
