Following the Time of Woes, the hold of Orzammar sealed themsleves off from the greater world save a single sally port, and consequently they cut themselves off from the rest of the dwarven empire. Spending centuries in isolation, this resulted in a far different society than that of normal Dawi holds. A rigid caste system took hold, and those dwarves who ventured to the surface were cast out from society as a whole, permitted only to return to the hold for the purposes of trade, and barely tolerated only for the vital role they provided. But it was when they returned not with goods, but stories of a ritual combat practised by all the other races, and the untold wealth, glory, and honor that were to be had in this sport, that Orzammar finally unsealed it's great gates.

While rejoining society as a whole, Orzammar still practises much of it's oppressive caste system rules and traditions, and as such there is only one place the dwarves of Orzammar stand equal before each other, and that is on the pitch on the few teams that venture to the greater world instead of playing in local leagues. Infact such is the honor bestowed upon the societal role of the team, that dwarves who leave for the surface are not considered "surface dwarves" as long as they stay with the team's massive caravan as it travels to and from matches. Needless to say, many suspect the massive financial patronage of th various guilds owes more to this loophole (and thus the ability for native merchants to undercut the surfacers without losing their caste) than any legitimate talent.
