Nestled between Scalorn and Duqueswood lies the land of Gildvale, a pleasant valley, where the sun seems to always shine, the maidens seem to always smile, and the beer and night-bean brew seems to always pour—all because the gildcoin never runs out. Founded by the wealthy lords Zefraus the Wise pledged to protect from all dragon attacks and beastling raids in exchange for mining rights to the Quartz Stone Mountains, Gildvale has enjoyed peace far longer than any other realm in the land. As such, Gildvale’s residents, mostly long-retired knights who, having served in the time before dragons, never had to fight more than a mere kobold or mud goblin, have grown fat and happy. None the less, the wealthy Beanbreaker family, renowned for producing the best hot cup of roasted night-bean brew in all the land, decided that (mostly for Beanbreaker Brew Co. advertising purposes) Gildvale needed to be represented in Blood Bowl, the most violent and brutal sport known to human kind (except for troll ice-dancing, of course). In the early days, the Griffins owner, Lord Gerald Beanbreaker, opted to keep his players from being maimed by paying other teams to play against the imperial noble team and paying them even more to lose consistently and convincingly. However, during a match in which Gerald’s son, Karic, tripped while carrying the ball, but instead of losing possession was gently carried over the goal line for a touchdown by a muzzled troll from the Eastern Waste Wanderers, league officials sensed something was amiss. After the ensuing investigation, controversy, and disgrace, the team was fined 500,000 gold pieces (which equates to only 500 gildcoins according to the latest exchange rates and is roughly what Beanbreaker Brew Co. makes in a single hour). Gildvale was also forbidden from ever playing again against its neighboring teams: the Bogwood Blood Belchers, the Miswampi Crocfins, the Scalorn Dragon Diggers, and the Eastern Waste Wanderers. Though Gerald’s first thought was to disband the team, a core of the team’s retired knights, led by Mace Bruisenbower, petitioned the wealthy roasted night-bean magnate to keep the team funded and operational. (Rumor holds that Bruisenbower’s petition came in the form of grabbing Gerald by the throat and then dangling him upside down over a boiling vat of his own delicious night-bean brew.) So now, for the first time in their history, the proud, noble Gildvale Griffins will play against unmuzzled trolls and other opponents paid not to step aside and let them score, but rather to step on their throats and watch them bleed. If you like rooting for underdogs, or if you like seeing the mollycoddled pampered wealthy classes beaten into a stupor, you’re sure to find something to root for in every Gildvale Griffins match! |
