The slave city of Belgettia has long been known for its cruelty and inhumanity. For centuries, the chieftains and their favored have treated captives from other lands and the lowest members of their own caste system as human chattel to be used and abused like common beasts.

As a deeply patriarchal society, the city is cruelest to its female slaves. Women bondservants and vassals are either forced into the brothels or killed for sport in the various gaming dens, where it is not uncommon to find men placing wagers on how long an unarmed girl, sometimes no older that 10, can survive in single combat against a caged saurus. For all of Bellgettia’s girl-child captives as well as any of the sewer-river daughters whose parents have no sons with which to pay the flesh tax, these were the only futures—until the city discovered blood bowl.

When Belgettia’s high chief Marco Despia witnessed a blood bowl match of orcs versus halflings during his travels through the Old World, the spectacle of violence and mayhem so thrilled him, that he struck upon a new third option for his city’s enslaved women. They could play for the Belgettia Bangers, an enslaved amazon blood bowl team, whose fate was largely lost to history until a set of letters written by one of its players was discovered.



Her name, as far as she was known on the pitch at least, was Amitila Venirslotta, and all that we know of the Belgettia Bangers and her tragic, yet heroic, life we have learned from letters like these:

My Dearest Luzio,

I know you are still too young to understand why I left you and Mother, but I can only hope by the time you are old enough to read these letters (should they ever reach you), that you will also be old enough to understand the terrible choice I was forced to make. I know that Mother had pledged you as a soldier for the warbands, and I know in your child’s mind, this kindled dreams of heroism, fame, and glory. But trust me, that is not what happens to boy soldiers who come from the sewer rivers. The only life they would have given you was one of torture and torment, ending only when they threw you into the vanguard of your first battle to serve as spear fodder.

I could not let that happen to you, and so I pledged myself. If every sewer-river family must pledge one slave, then let it be me. But I will not degrade myself as a concubine or a saurus meal, I have taken this new route Chief Despia has offered. I have signed on to become a jaguar warrior blocker in the sport of blood bowl.

In truth, I know little about the game, and from what little I know, I understand it is dangerous and it is brutal. But it offers one thing all other avenues do not. It offers a chance. If I can perhaps learn to play this sport, perhaps become one of its stars, then I can buy myself out of bondage. When that day comes, I will return to you and Mother, and take you far from Belgettia to live the life you were meant to live, a life where you can become a hero, where you can have your adventures, and most importantly where you will be nobody’s slave.

Until that time, I ask that you forgive me for the choice that I made and try to understand, that because of the love I bear you, little brother, it was not a choice at all. This was the only option.

We are traveling to our first match now, and our masters allowed me to pack along my hides and my clay-river paints, so I promise to write often and share my paintings so that you know I’m OK. (I'm including one I did of my teammates, who have already become like sisters to me. I can’t wait to tell you all about them, but for now I must sleep, for tomorrow we play our first match against a team of black orcs.)
