The hopeless few were not always a blood bowl team: once, the were the unmluckiest company in all the human armies. Thru bad karma or sadistic persecution from superiors, D company, 2nd battalion, 1105 regiment have always been cannon fodder. Most soliers preferred court-martial and execution over transfer to the Hopeless Few: it was usually a quicker and more painless death. One day, after a particularily bloody battle (bloddy for the Hopeless few), a general took pity upon them, and in his generosity handed them a month of R and R. During this god-given present of rest, the Few decided to never again return to the horrors of war, preferring to change their vocation to something which seemed (to them ) much safer: blood Bowl.

After a month of practice, the were once again ordered to the front, but the hopeless few were soldiers no more: faking their own deaths in a stunningly violent traffic pileup, the Hopeless few disappeared only to be reborn into hte aspiring blood bowl team that they are today.
