Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) is an opera by Richard Wagner.

It's about a captain who cursed God when he was about to die in a storm. As punishment he had to sail to seas until Judgement Day. Every seven years however he can go on land, if he finds true love he will be set free -to die.

My rats are all named after ships who were involved in big disasters, as punishment (or reward) for leaving the ship as rats tend to do.
