Captian Glaisden looked over the degenerate mob of prisoners, the Scum of the Old World, each having been condemned to death by their respective races. He raised his voice, addressing the caged murderers, thieves, and highwaycritters. "All right, you louts! You have been brought here for one reason - to face justice. To this end, you have a choice. My preference is to hang the lot of ya, and that's your first option. Don't worry, our hangman is very good, we don't call him 'one drop' for nothing. Your alternative to being hanged is to join a new blood bowl team, which we will be putting in a tourney two weeks hence. Should you join the team, you will renounce your names and take on names befitting the low-down dirty cutthroat team that our coach, Joren One-eye, will shape you into. If you should win the tournament, you will be considered to have paid your debt to society and will be free - except for the wizards' mark on your forehead that will kill you if you ever break the law again! Any questions?" The criminals immediately raised their voices, and for a few seconds chaos reigned in the prison yard. Red-faced, Captian Glaisden shouted down the crowd. "'Ere you gitz! shut it before I shut it for you! To hell with the bloody questions, The only words I want to here out of your mouths are 'yes' or 'no', and not till we've asked you!" Silence fell over the yard. Captian Glaisden slowly walked past the cages, asking each if they would like to be on the team. First asked was a human, from the captian's own province, a large, deceptively quick thug. "yes," he muttered. "I'll join yer team if it means I get to live." His sidekick, the most ordinary-looking sneak thief the Captian had ever seen, immediately chimed in. "I go where he goes! you've got to let me play!" one by one, the roster was filled. An elf, sentenced to die for doing horrible things to forest animals, four dwarves who were so well-known for their tavern-wrecking bar fights that an accidental fatality had gotten them all in the clink, two halfling brothers who poisoned their family for the inheritance, and a Treeman who got tired of forest animals doing horrible things to him. Ten Players all said yes, but it took eleven to make a blood bowl team, and no one else was volunteering. The captian again raised his voice. "does no one else want a chance to live? a chance for freedom? a chance for glory? Pah, cowards, the lot of you, and hanging's too good for ya!" An ogre, asleep in his cell and chained to the wall, heard the ruckus in the yard. He wasnt sentenced to die, just to work, but he was tired of breaking rocks and wanted to break some heads. "Crunch! Crunch like Blood! Crunch like Bowl!" he howled, as he ripped his chains out of the wall, crashed through the wall, and into the prison yard, where a shocked Captian Glaisden trembled. "Crunch like Bowl!" the ogre howled again. And thus was a team for the Last Man Standing. tourney born and named by it's last volunteer... |
