In wargaming terms the Italians have always been an interesting challenge. In English-language histories their many faults and defeats are regularly paraded. It is easy to see the Italian Army as hopelessly outclassed in equipment, strategy and morale.
However, this picture is far from accurate. To a significant degree it stems from British propaganda. At the end of 1940, Great Britain was on the ropes. They had been defeated in France, their army was in tatters, their allies all surrendered, and although the RAF and Royal Navy had kept the German Army from actually invading, their cities were under devastating day and night bombing. There was only one bright spot in sight. The Italian Army fighting in Africa was not doing well. The Western Desert Force (later to become the famous Eighth Army) had halted their hesitant invasion of Egypt and was throwing them back in disorder. In February 1941, some 300,000 Italian soldiers surrendered to the 30,000-strong Western Desert Force. Finally Britain had a victory it could trumpet to the world. From then on every British defeat in the desert was attributed to the German soldiers fighting under the unbeatable General Rommel, sent to rescue his Italian allies, while their victories were won over the lacklustre Italians. It made great news, explaining defeats and giving morale-raising victories.
In truth things were not so simple. Even at the beginning the Italians were proving their mettle in places. The first clash between Italian and British armoured formations was an Italian success, despite the overall failure of their army. Time and again Italian units defeated their British counterparts, only to have their victories attributed to the Germans. This process wasn’t helped by the fact that almost all of the Axis infantry in the desert war were Italians. When the Axis forces were forced to retreat, the immobile infantry were inevitably left behind with no option but surrender, while the mobile Germans retired to fight another day. These mass surrenders only reinforced the stereotype.
