Wingless Wonders
Retired [X2] Skaven

The Wingless Wonders' head coach is in the midst of a blood feud with Clan Eshin. Thus: no Gutter Runners play for this team.

--

Interviewer: Coach, isn't it traditional to have Gutter Runners on a Skaven team?

Coach: Arrr! There be two schools of thought on that matter: all the other Skaven coaches say it is; I say it isn't. Arrr!

I: So how did this falling out with Clan Eshin come about?

C: Well, that's a funny story, actually. Although, it's not so much funny as it is long. Once there was a young rat: now, this rat was nothing special, he lived in the sewers, making his nest next to the outflow from a dyeworks.

This house of dyers had a long and storied history. They had been founded through a grant by the Emperor Sigmund - he being the third of the fake emperors (the ones made of porcelain), of course. For three hundred years since, they had been dyeing clothes every colour except blue: blue being banned in accordance with local bye-laws, which restricted blue dyes to the priesthood, and to beggars: who could not in fact afford to dye their clothes anyway (but that's another story - one I shall try to get back onto later).

In any case, one day, this rat was caught in a trap, while scavenging around the dyeworks for food. The worker who found it was about to stave in its skull and throw it back into the sewers when he saw something which stunned him: this rat's fur was dyed blue in places! Had this worker, Werner, been well-paid and loyal, our story would end here - in fact, there would be no more story!

However, Werner had been bribed by a competing dyeworks to report to them on the dyeing techniques used where he worked. In fact, he had never had anything to report, as the art of dyeing had not advanced in decades (since the perfection of a fast purple dye by Johann the Frequently Confused, indeed). The extra income had allowed Werner to raise four children, while still being able to escape to the alehouse one evening in three (not including feast days).

Now Werner found himself in a bit of a bind: this rat might be evidence of sharp practice by his employers, and as such might be used by those who bribed him to shut down the business - or at least hurt its reputation a bit. Werner might well be paid generously if he gave it to them; on the other hand, he knew that his foreman had been unhappy with him lately, and that his job might be one of the first to go if the works were to go through tough times.

Werner stood, trapped in thought, for some time, watching the rat squirm helplessly in the trap.

I: Excuse me: what exactly does all this have to do with you and Clan Eshin?

C: Bear with me: it will all make sense to you very soon.

While Werner was still pondering, he heard some footsteps behind him: his foreman was approaching! Left with no time to make up his mind, Werner snatched up the trap with the rat still in it and stuffed it into his pocket. It seemed quiet, and he was fairly sure it wouldn't be able to bite him through his padded jacket. Fairly sure …

Werner got through the rest of the day without incident, though he would freeze up in panic whenever he felt the rat fidgeting around. When the whistle went and he was free to go he was left more exhausted by a day's work than he had ever been in his life!

Making his weary way home through the streets of Nuln, however, Werner still hadn't made up his mind what to do. On impulse, he turned into the shrine to Our Lady Shallya Of The Forgiving Gaze And Notched Chopping Board to pray for inspiration.

I: May I interrupt you for just a moment? I'd like to ask briefly about the Age of Missing Games, if I may.

C: Oh yes, certainly. It was a strange time. The entire dream would share a hallucinatory team. I mean … the whole team would …

You get the idea.

We found ourselves on the Blood Bowl pitch, ready to play our little, ratty hearts out as usual. Matches would begin, and it all seemed as real as day. Once, someone - I think it was Patient Rat - even died! We played some beautiful ball, put together some smooth plays, wowed the fans and ran in some touchdowns. We left the games in celebration, but then we somehow awoke … and none of it had ever happend.

Patient Rat was quite pleased about this, as you can imagine! The rest of us: well, it was a bit vexing. Still, there are always more games!

I: Indeed! Now, do go on with your story …

C: Right, where was I? Oh yes, the shrine to Our Lady Shallya Of The Forgiving Gaze And Notched Chopping Board …

From an alcove of the shrine, one of Shallya's acolytes watched Werner enter. Her name was Marga. Oddly enough, Marga had never seen a rat. Not only that, she would never in all her life see a rat. I mention this not because it has any relevance to my story, but because … ahem.

Right, so Werner knelt before Shallya's altar, and bowed his head in silent prayer. Surely, he thought, surely my Lady Of The Forgiving Gaze And Notched Chopping Board will guide me to the right path in this matter! The rat fidgeted in his jacket pocket …
