| In the words of New York gang chronicler Herbert Asbury, the Whyos were "as vicious a collection of thugs, murderers and thieves as ever operated in the metropolis." They dominated lower Manhattan for longer than any other gang in history, for most of the 1870s and 1880s. The Whyos were pioneers in gambling, extortion and murder for hire--Organized crime of the 20th century owes a debt to these trailblazers. The mafia concept of the "made man" traces to the Whyos, who in their heyday would insist on a new member having committed murder before he could join. They invented brutal weapons of combat and torture, such as eye gougers, and blades built into their boots for killing and maiming downed foes. In short, they probably would have loved Blood Bowl. |
