Deep in the mists of dim antiquity, the nascent Jedi Order was split by a schism. On the one hand, the majority of the Force-using warrior-philosophers who would call themselves the Jedi believed that learning the ways of the dark side of the Force would lead only to ruin and felt it should be entirely forbidden; and on the other there was a significant minority who instead argued that the Jedi could master the Force only if they attempted to master both sides and, furthermore, that it was possible to control the powers of the dark side without eventually being controlled by them. The schism eventually led to battle, and the dark side-using renegades were defeated and exiled. They fled to the depths of space until they found the world of Korriban, where they encountered a primitive species, called the Sith, who had limited abilities of dark-side Force use. The Sith worshipped the renegades as gods, and they began to call themselves Sith Lords. Eventually, interbreeding led to an elimination in difference of species, and the Sith simply were the Sith.

It eventually came to pass that the Sith were destroyed in a war with the Old Republic and the Jedi, but their artefacts and dark side spirits would tempt and corrupt many a Force-user (including not a few Jedi) over the millennia, and the Sith Order, like some cruel and wicked phoenix, would rise once more from the ashes, taking on different configurations in its eternal quest to prove the supremacy of the dark side of the Force and destroy the Jedi once and for all. This task was nearly accomplished by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, otherwise known as Emperor Palpatine, who mostly extinguished the Jedi Order and established the tyrannical Galactic Empire. In the fullness of time, however, the Emperor was slain, his prized apprentice redeemed to the light side of the Force, and the Sith Order was once again abolished. However, the restored Jedi Order must be watchful, for the day will come when some dark side Force-user takes up the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith once more.
