Never has a land been so forsaken by nature or by the gods as Sylvania. Close to uninhabitable, Sylvania's forest are dingy corpses of twisted, half rotten trees that claw what little nourishment they can form the thin soil. Desolate moorlands and rocky hills punctuate the yellow-leafed woods, wind-swept and storm-shrouded by dark clouds that sweep down from the World's Edge Mountains on an almost daily basis.

It is a depressing, dismal realm settled in a long ago time by evil men dispossessed by the unification of the peoples of the Empire. When warpstone shards rained upon the realm in the year 1112, Sylvania's fell reputation was sealed, as the dead erupted from the ground and laid siege to the villages and towns. Ever since, it has been a loathed and feared provence, and is generally avoided by all right thinking people.

Sparsely populated, Sylvania has long proved a refuge for men intent on dark deeds and secretive studies, as well as evil creatures hunted by the forces of the Emperor. In half-ruined castles, dark mausoleums and forgotten keeps dwell fell Necromancers and vicious Vampires, and their servants.

The scattered villages and hamlets of Sylvania are even more isolated and parochial than other settlements of the Empire. Grubbing what existence they can from the infertile land, the peasantry live in small communities of inter-related families, never venturing far from their crude hovels for fear of what lies in wait in the wilderness that surrounds them.

Sylvanian villages are in a constant state of disrepair, for good stone and wood are hard to come by, and many buildings have been patched up for centuries. All, however, have barred or boarded windows and heavy doors. Crude fetishes and charms of a dozen gods hang on every lintel and frame. The villages daub symbols of protection on their doors and gates with pigs blood, to guard against the horrors of the night. Ever since the temples of the land were abandoned and looted, they have fallen into disrepair, for no priest ventures into the blighted land. Of those who do, always with a large and well armed bodyguard, they don't stay long, only for a few days to collect merge tithe or preform basic rituals for the ungrateful locals. Truly, Sylvania is a godless realm, for darkness claimed it centuries ago.

Of all the miserable forests of Sylvania, Hunger wood is the least populated and most despised. It is a spirit infested maze of briars and bogs, in which the unwary are easily trapped. Parties that venture under the trees do not return. They are doomed instead to wander for days and weeks, until they are lost and fall upon each other, forced for the need to drink and feed. Here, Necromancer Jacob de Mort makes his home. An ex-wizard-for-hire for human teams, he was soon kicked out for cavorting with necromantic teams, and learning necromantic skills.

He found a home in Sylvania, he soon found a hole in his black heart that no amount of terrorizing locals could fill. He soon stumbled upon a human Blood Bowl team on a training camp next to his home in the Hunger Woods. Unleashing one of the many Ghoul tribes that worship him upon them, he raised the corpses and unleashed them upon the open circuit...
