As 2013 began, I returned to FUMBBL, vowing to actually build a team instead of putting up a dozen different squads and barely getting any into double digits. Norse was an unlikely choice, given that my coach page is littered with the husks of dead Norse teams. But they've held up surprisingly well so far, reaching my highest TV ever and proving competitive in a claw-packed environment. FIRST TEN GAMES Five wins -- three by concession -- but four losses. We've only gotten one chance to actually beat claw... and those claws were on necromantic werewolves, not exactly what we had in mind. (We still managed to BH one, en route to a 2-0 win.) Our biggest star so far: easily Beat Piling On Play Fend, the berserker whose 38 SPPs include 12 casualties. SECOND TEN GAMES We're still just barely on the right side of .500. We faced two Claw teams... actually the same chaos team twice. We tied them both times. Meanwhile on our side, something has been awakened in these guys... they've out-casualtied opponents 22-4 in the last 4 games. (You'd think that would lead to wins... nope. Actually went 2-2 in those games. Lost by three TDs twice.) THIRD TEN GAMES Over the last 10 games, the team went barnstorming up to the mountains, and faced a truly fearsome set of foes: necromantic, dwarf, necromantic, orc, chaos, chaos, dwarf, human, pact, chaos. The boys proved equal to the challenge, though, going 5-3 with 2 draws... more shockingly, they actually held up on the damage-dealing front, dealing 35 casualties and taking 33. Only two games featured significant player losses, but they were big ones: Buffman's Bros took out both our throwers in game 23, and our Snow Troll and veteran ulfwerener Beat Dwarfs Play Claw succumbed to the assault of chaos warriors in game 30. Beat Dwarfs Play Claw died with 75 SPPs, good for 12th among active players at the time of his death. FOURTH TEN GAMES At an all-time high of 1860TV, we now have multiple skilled-up killers, two AG4 guys, and a 17-7-16 record. (Just staying ahead of it!) No troll, and it may be a while before we can afford to introduce him, but we can't have everything, can we? FIFTH TEN GAMES 50 games! We remain barely above .500, at 21-9-20. We definitely do better against chaos, with their AV8 and frequent guard shortages, than against other bash teams. Two players are above 100 SPP, but our top three guys are all injured. Still moving... SIXTH TEN GAMES Finally, some daylight! 7 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw... we got drawn against chaos 5 times, and that's always good news for us. We played as high as 2140k -- my highest TV ever -- though the death of mighty berserker Beat Strip Ball Play Sure Hands in game 60 puts a bit of a damper on things. On the bright side, Beat Piling On Play Fend is only 4 points away from legendary status, and Beat +MA Play Sprint is also closing in on the long-sought goal. Beat Piling On Play Fend is also no. 4 among Box berserkers in casualties, and no. 10 among berserkers in all divisions. How far can he get? We shall see... |
